Dog Carriers come in two basic styles - plastic or material - with a of designs, colors, and materials within those groups. Every dog carrier model has both advantages and disadvantages. It depends on your needs and preference in a dog carrier.
One
extremely popular type of dog carrier is known as the soft sided carrier. Soft
sided dog carriers are very easy to move around and they are lightweight. There
are models that can fold up like a small suitcase whenever you’re not using it.
There is a lot of ventilation because of the mesh panels that are on the sides
and front of the carrier. The flooring is normally padded and the doors are shut
securely by a zipper. Check out the Petacular
Dog Carriers.
Soft sided dog carriers are fine as long as your dog is
inside while you are around. We caution that due to the material used, many pets
have been known to actually chew or claw their way out of the plastic mesh
sides. So, if your dog has a tendency to chew and claw when left alone, then you
may want to consider a different type of carrier.
What Size Should You Purchase?
Soft sided carriers aren’t much different than any other type of dog carrier when it comes to choosing the correct size. Just make certain that it
is large enough so your dog can stand up on all fours without bumping his head. Your dog must be able to turn around, stretch, and lie down.
It is not recommended to get an excessively large carrier, especially
if you are still working on housetraining your dog. Having an excessive amount
of room inside the dog carrier may cause your dog to go to the bathroom on the
far side without worrying about the mess. This concept is discussed in greater
detail in our article
Crate Training a Puppy or Dog.
